Endangered animal – The blue whale

An endangered animal is one that is at risk of becoming extinct, which means no longer in existence. It is really sad to realize that because of mankind the number of the endangered species grows more and more every year. Nowadays many animals are facing extinction such as Siberian (Amur) Tiger, Loggerhead Turtle, Northern Bald Ibis, Lion-Tailed Macaque, Mandarin Duck, Mountain Gorilla, Jackass Penguin, Blue Whale, Komodo Dragon, Golden Lion Tamarin, Californian Condor. I would like to write about one of the endangered species: it’s the Blue whale. Blue whales were abundant in nearly all the oceans on Earth until the beginning of the twentieth century. For over a century, they were hunted almost to extinction by whalers until protected by the international community in 1966. The Blue Whale  is a real champion in many categories: it is not only the largest mammal that has ever lived on the planet (length is more than 30 meters), but he's the loudest one (louder than a jet plane). His heartbeat can be detected at a distance of two miles, and the weight is equivalent to the weight of 25 elephants (180 tones). Blue whale's stomach can hold one ton of krill, while its daily rate equal to four tonnes. During breathing the air flow they produce, creates 15 meter fountain above water surface. Giant whales feed with tiny crustaceans, krills and small fish. Among the main threats to the existence of blue whales is the global climate change, noise and other pollution of the oceans and whaling (which is still allowed in some countries). Today some people cannot understand why there is a need to care about endangered species. But we should realize that it is important to keep the planet’s biorhythm. The more species disappear, the more defenceless the ecosystem becomes and it would fall apart as the links in the food chain become broken. For example, there are certain animals that only eat certain plants and those plants may need that animal to pollinate it or spread its seed. Without one, the other one is also likely to die out. It is like a chain. Human beings, let's think about it.
